Exploring the universal yearning for soul — and how it shapes who we are and what we seek
There is a quiet ache that moves through many lives — a restlessness that can’t be stilled by success, possessions, or even love.
It surfaces in moments of transition, in the wake of loss, or in the stillness between seasons of life.
It’s the whisper that asks: Who am I, really? What am I here for?
This is the longing for meaning, purpose, and connection — a yearning that has guided humanity for as long as we’ve existed.
Across every culture and spiritual tradition, this desire to know and be known, to live with depth and authenticity, has shaped our art, religion, and philosophy.
In modern life, however, this longing is often obscured. We live in a world that prizes speed and productivity — one that rewards doing over being, intellect over intuition. Many of us find ourselves outwardly successful yet inwardly disconnected, fulfilling expectations but feeling strangely empty.
And yet, this very restlessness — the dissatisfaction we sometimes fear — can be the seed of awakening.
It signals the beginning of a new phase in consciousness: the call to live with soul.
The Search for Soul in Modern Life
When we speak of “soul” at Metavision, we’re not referring to something abstract or religious.
We speak of the felt sense of aliveness that connects us to meaning — the essence that animates our thoughts, emotions, and relationships.
To live without soul is to feel estranged from oneself, to move through the world as though something vital is missing.
To live with soul is to sense depth in ordinary moments — to see the sacred in the everyday, and to understand our challenges as invitations to grow in wisdom and compassion.
This is the essence of holistic practice: seeing the human being as an integrated whole — body, mind, heart, and spirit.
Rather than pathologising the longing for meaning, we learn to listen to it.
It becomes a guide, pointing us toward what is most authentic, and in doing so, it shapes how we live, work, and relate.
A Path of Reflection and Reconnection
In our upcoming masterclass, Metavision lecturer Jessica Raschke invites you to explore this longing in depth — to approach it not as a question to be answered, but as a living mystery to enter.
Through cultural, spiritual, and reflective lenses, Jessica will guide participants in exploring how this yearning has been understood throughout history — from ancient wisdom traditions to contemporary psychology — and how it continues to express itself in our personal lives today.
Participants will be invited to engage in gentle reflective practices, exploring:
- How longing shows up in your own story.
- What your search for meaning reveals about your deeper values and direction.
- How connecting with purpose can restore vitality and authenticity in both personal and professional life.
This experiential approach reflects Metavision’s belief that learning is not just intellectual — it’s transformational.
Every insight has the potential to awaken new layers of self-understanding.
A Metavision Perspective: The Longing as the Light
At Metavision, we believe that the search for meaning is not something to overcome — it’s a sign of life itself.
In fact, it is often through the very experience of uncertainty and emptiness that we become more real, more compassionate, and more attuned to others.
Holistic counselling invites us to see symptoms, struggles, and longings not as problems but as messages from the soul — each one pointing toward integration and wholeness.
When we meet these inner experiences with curiosity and presence, transformation unfolds naturally.
This philosophy echoes the wisdom of Rudolf Steiner, whose work continues to inspire Metavision’s approach to human development.
Steiner’s short verse Imagination captures this inner truth with luminous simplicity:
Imagination
More radiant than the sun
Purer than the snow
More subtle than the ether
Is the Self
The Spirit in my heart
I am that Self
That Self am I
In these few lines, Steiner reminds us that the Self — the essence of who we are — is already whole, already radiant. Our longing for meaning is not a search for something missing, but a remembering of what has always been within us. When we attune to this deeper presence, we reconnect with the creative, compassionate spirit that animates life itself.
Education as a Journey of Becoming
This inner awakening lies at the heart of a Metavision education.
Our programs — the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy (Holistic Practice) and the Graduate Diploma of Counselling (Holistic Practice) — are designed not only to equip students with professional skills, but to invite a profound personal journey.
Through process-oriented learning, experiential inquiry, and reflective practice, students learn to hold space for both themselves and others.
They come to see that healing and understanding arise through relationship — through deep listening, empathy, and the capacity to be present to the unfolding of life.
In this way, the study of counselling becomes a spiritual and psychological journey — a return to meaning, connection, and authenticity.
