Discover Where You Are in Life: An Inner Work Exercise for Deep Self-Awareness

Self Awareness Inner Work

At Metavision Institute, we believe that true transformation begins with inner work. By slowing down, tuning in, and engaging the imagination, you can connect with your “witness self” — the part of you that observes without judgment.

This guided exercise invites you to step back from the busyness of everyday life and reflect on your journey: where you’ve come from, where you are right now, and where you may be heading. It’s a practice our students find deeply insightful as they prepare for studies in holistic counselling and psychotherapy.

Step Into the Cloud: A Guided Visualisation

  1. Settle into silence
Sit quietly, soften your mind into a state of “not knowing,” and imagine a cloud approaching on the horizon. When it reaches you, allow yourself to rest upon it — feeling gently held.
  2. Observe your present life
From your cloud’s vantage point, look down on your life as it is right now. Where and with whom do you live? What does your lifestyle look like? What emotions — joy, tension, sorrow — are alive in you today?
Express what you see in whatever way feels natural: draw, paint, move, sing, or simply sit with colours, shapes, and sensations.
  3. Journey backward in time
Let the cloud carry you back in five-year intervals. Notice the places you’ve been and the turning points that have shaped you. Allow memories to surface — significant or subtle. Capture them in words, images, or gestures.
  4. Journey forward in time
Now, let the cloud float you into the future. What emerges when you look one, two, five years ahead — or even toward the end of your life? What dreams or possibilities call to you? Again, express your vision however it comes.
  5. Integrate and reflect
If practicing with others, share your experiences and listen to theirs. Then, take a few moments to journal. Write down what you saw, felt, or discovered.

Why Inner Work Matters in Counselling & Psychotherapy

Exercises like this one cultivate awareness, imagination, and the ability to witness — all essential qualities for counsellors and psychotherapists. At Metavision, we weave inner practices throughout our Graduate Diploma of Counselling (Holistic Practice) and Master of Counselling & Psychotherapy (Holistic Practice) programs, so students don’t just study theory but also experience deep personal transformation.
