Why True Growth Starts Within: The Inner Work of Becoming a Counsellor

Metavision Inner Work

At Metavision, we often say that studying counselling is not just an academic pursuit — it’s a journey of becoming.
Before we can hold space for others, we must first learn to hold space for ourselves. This is where true growth begins — within.

The Call to Go Inward

Many people feel drawn to counselling because they want to help others heal, grow, and find meaning. Yet one of the first realisations in holistic counselling training is that transformation starts from the inside out.

It invites you to slow down, listen deeply, and begin noticing the layers of your own experience — the beliefs, defences, emotions, and stories that shape how you meet the world. Through this process, you begin to discover that awareness itself is healing.

True presence with another person is born from the capacity to be present with yourself.

Learning Through Experience

Unlike traditional academic models that emphasise theory first, Metavision’s holistic approach is experiential. We believe that knowledge is embodied through lived experience — through reflection, relationship, and practice.

Every class becomes a mirror. Every process an invitation to deepen your understanding of what it means to be human.

Through this, you begin to develop compassion for your own complexity and, in turn, a deeper empathy for others.

Inner Work Practice: Unfolding a Flirt

This simple yet profound practice, drawn from Process Work, invites you to slow down and connect with your dreaming mind — the intuitive, symbolic part of you that perceives meaning in the world around you.

Take your time with each step and allow curiosity to guide you.

Unfolding a Flirt — Inner Work Practice

  1. Relax and go foggy.
Close your eyes. Take a few slow breaths. Allow yourself to soften and let go of what you think you know. Become clouded and unknowing.

  2. Open your eyes slowly.
From this softened state, look around and notice what draws your attention — what’s “flirting” with you. It might be a sound, an object, a light, or even a feeling.

  3. Stay with it.
With patience and love, stay with what called you. Find its essence. Feel into its energy until polarity dissolves — until you and it are one.

  4. Express it.
Let it move through you — perhaps through a gesture, sound, or small movement that captures its essence.

  5. See yourself through its eyes.
From this perspective, look back at yourself. How does it see you? What message might it have for you?

  6. Integrate.
Reflect on how this essence might already live within you — or how you could invite it more fully into your life.

  7. Journal your insights.
Write down what you experienced. What aspect of you has been waiting to be seen or expressed?

Why This Work Matters

Practices like Unfolding a Flirt remind us that growth begins with awareness. They help us access our innate wisdom, expand our perception, and meet all parts of ourselves with compassion.

For counsellors and psychotherapists, this inner work forms the foundation of true therapeutic presence — the ability to meet clients from a place of depth, openness, and authenticity.

As one Metavision student Suzie shared:

“Metavision provided a safe space to hold the mirror up to myself. The growth I experienced was both professional and profoundly personal.”
