At the heart of the Metavision approach is a belief that healing begins with presence — a quality of being that invites us into deeper relationship with ourselves, with others, and with the natural world. In our fast-paced, hyper-cognitive culture, we often overlook the subtle wisdom of perception. But what happens when we slow down and learn to truly see, sense, and feel?
Here is a simple yet profound exercise we use at Metavision to help reconnect with our embodied awareness and awaken a more holistic way of perceiving:
A Practice in Perceiving
- Sit comfortably and allow your body to settle.
- Gently turn your attention inward and scan through your body. Take your time. Notice what you notice.
- Now, shift your awareness to a natural object in the room — a leaf, a shell, a flower, a rock.
- Observe it closely. Notice its form, colours, textures, and details. Let yourself simply see it.
- Then, move your attention to your heart. Allow your heart to feel the object — to open to it.
- Let the object speak to you in its own way. What does it evoke in you? What stirs within?
- After a moment, return to your body. Has anything shifted?
- Reflect: how did your experience of the object change when you moved from mind to heart?
This exercise draws on the work of Goethe, the 18th-century poet and scientist who offered a radically different way of approaching the world — one not rooted in dominance or dissection, but in reverence.
He wrote:
“When in the exercise of his powers of observation man undertakes to confront the world of nature, he will at first experience a tremendous compulsion to bring what he finds under his control. Before long, however, these objects will thrust themselves upon him with such force that he, in turn, must feel the obligation to acknowledge their power and pay homage to their effects.”
— Goethe
This way of perceiving is central to the Metavision ethos. It invites us to move beyond cognitive observation into relational perception – where the heart, body, and soul are engaged alongside the mind.
In therapeutic practice, this approach opens the door to deeper empathy, intuitive insight, and a profound sense of connection.
For many of our students, it becomes the foundation of their own inner transformation and the healing they offer others.
